Gene Murrow, New York

Gene Murrow has been an English country dancer and musician since 1965, and has been teaching and calling at clubs, workshops, festivals, and balls throughout the United States as well as England, Scotland, Europe, and Japan since 1988. As a dance musician, he has made four recordings: "Measured Obsession" (music for dances by Fried Herman), and "Old Friends," "New Friends," and "Band of Friends" (for dances by Gary Roodman). He is also the Producer of the series of English dance recordings featuring the Boston-based band Bare Necessities.

Gene approaches the English country dance as a medium in which dancers and musicians alike participate in the realization of a works of art. His dance workshops strive to make their richness of structure, musical form, texture, and affect enjoyable and appreciated by dancers of all abilities.

A professionally-trained musician, Gene is the founder and Executive Director of Gotham Early Music Scene, a service and advocacy organization for early music in New York City, and has served on the Board of Directors of Early Music America. He currently is a member of the Board of Pinewoods Camp, Inc., and has served on the Board of the Country Dance and Song Society of America, and was President of the American Recorder Society.
